The captivating works of Ian Greig are inspired by water. The comtemplative surface of water with it's shifting echoes and traces of a reflected reality offers a rich visual experience of illusion and ambiguity that Ian explores aethetically via the processes of painting. In these meditative studies of nature he responds to the play of light and shadow of the surface of ponds, rivers and streams. These almost opalescent oil paintings have a dream-like essence, with delicate hues, graceful forms and the subtlest of graphic brush-marks conveying a sense of silence, stillness and reverie that moves the mind beyond the world of the commonplace

“My paintings are inspired by the aesthetic contemplation of water, where three visual fields come into play simultaneously - the bottom of the pool, the surface with its leaves and ripples, and the reflections of what exists above. All these combine to create a fascinating interplay of depth, space and ambiguous perspectives that I explore in paintings spanning both the figurative and the abstract. In these works I attempt to reconcile the horizontal and the vertical, the invisable with the visable, and to explore that slippery space between meanings where oppositions and reversals can occur and where fixed categories dissolve. Each new series is an adventure into the ephemeral and the ineffable via the process of painting; an ongoing project in which the outcomes, like the subject of its focus, are in a constant state of flux.”

Greig has held several successful exhibitions throughout Australia, and is represented in corporate and private collections in South Australia, New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia and the Australian Capital Territory.
